Luke 16:14-31
14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. 15 And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
16 “The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it. 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to become void.
18 “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. 24 And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house— 28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”
Reflection
All the teaching in Luke 16 touches in some way on the issue of wealth. Verses 14–15 speak on the danger of loving money, which results from a failure to see what is truly valuable. Because the Pharisees are “lovers of money,” they cannot appreciate Christ’s teachings and so they begin to mock him (v. 14). Usually money is valued and sought because of the pleasure and honor it brings. Jesus points out that even though wealth brings honor with other people, God sees our hearts (cf. 1 Sam. 16:7) and despises our infatuation with wealth (Luke 16:15). Once again the gospel calls us to consciously embrace God’s kingdom values (Rom. 12:2) and turn away from the values of sinful human society. This is possible only as we ponder God’s great love for us revealed in the gospel of grace.
1 Thessalonians 2:13-20
13 And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. 14 For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews, 15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankind 16 by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved—so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But God's wrath has come upon them at last!
17 But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face, 18 because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us. 19 For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? 20 For you are our glory and joy.
Reflection
The teaching of the apostles is not inferior to anything else we find in the Bible. Their message is the authoritative Word of God himself (1 Thess. 2:13), pronounced to us by the very spokesmen of Jesus Christ. When we read the New Testament we are encountering this message, faithfully preserved in words for us from God. If we want to hear God speak to us, we can listen to the Holy Spirit–inspired words written by these men.
Psalm 119:12-16
12 Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes! 13 With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. 14 In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. 15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. 16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
Keep prayerfully filling your mind with God’s holy Word so that you can know him better. Be sure to pray as you read, asking God’s Spirit to change you as he gives you understanding.
