From the Gospels

Matthew 25:31-46

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Reflection

In the previous parable we saw that those who are preparing for Christ’s return are living a life of faithful obedience to God with the opportunities and resources he has given them (Matt. 25:14–30). In Matthew 25:31–46 we see that the faithfulness Jesus has in mind includes helping needy Christians (v. 40). These “brothers” of Jesus are disciples who had been impoverished, lonely, sick, and imprisoned (25:35–36, 42–43) because of their faithfulness to Christ’s mission (5:11–12; 10:16–25, 40–42; 24:9). Those who have genuine faith in Christ will bear the “good fruit” of love for other Christians. It is one of the marks of a true disciple (1 John 2:9–11).

From the Epistles

1 Corinthians 7:25-35

25 Now concerning the betrothed, I have no command from the Lord, but I give my judgment as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy. 26 I think that in view of the present distress it is good for a person to remain as he is. 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned, and if a betrothed woman marries, she has not sinned. Yet those who marry will have worldly troubles, and I would spare you that. 29 This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, 30 and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, 31 and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.

32 I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. 33 But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. 35 I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.

Reflection

All Christians have an equally valid spiritual status, regardless of our relational or social position (1 Cor. 7:17–24). Additionally, whatever our stage of life, it is only temporary because the “present form of this world is passing away” (v. 31). Therefore, regardless of our circumstances (v. 24), God does not want us to live anxiously hoping for a new situation (vv. 26–27). He wants us to be “free from anxieties” (v. 32), and to devote ourselves to advancing his lifegiving, loving purposes wherever we are (vv. 32–34).

From the Psalms

Psalm 131:1-3

131: O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. 2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.

3 O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.

Thoughts For Prayer

Anxiety can be spiritually devastating. When you spot worry in your heart, be sure to cast your anxieties upon Christ, knowing that he cares for you (1 Pet. 5:7).
